REAL ESTATE BROKERS versus NAR
Written By Alisha Chen
I rarely find an entire content of opinions and information that I agree with for the most part. I happen to “run” into this YouTube video to be as like-minded as my own. For more than 10 years, I’ve expressed my concerns and disagreements with many real estate organizations after years of practice. Most organizations sounded great when I first heard of their purpose, mission, goals, and desires, and would be proud to be a part of a great organization.
However, the more leadership experience I get, the more knowledge I have, and the more insight is revealed when situations arise. What I thought was a great organization that seeks to practice what it preaches was far from doing so. The larger the organization, usually, the greater its proven success in the public eyes and the less they are willing to listen to little people.
For more than 10 years, Brokers and Agents were fined unethically seeking the best interest of our clients and there is not much we can do about it because we are too small and they are too big. They typically listen to whoever contributes more to their financial benefits such as large Brokerages, Franchise Brokerages, etc.
This video expresses the rise of Brokers who do not want to be taken advantage of any more or be “pigeon held” against our preference. Being a part of NAR membership is a part of the “requirement” to belong to one of the MLS associations to have access to access to property listings and data. When I called the California Association of Attorneys and the Realtor Association Board as a Broker to disassociate with NAR, I was told I either had to take it all or leave. In the past, there were not enough good online platforms to market properties for my clients as a listing Broker. However, there are plenty of online platforms now that we can list with. It will just take us more manual time posting them one by one but still do-able. With the current unethical restrictions and penalties that NAR and MLS impose on us, the balance is tipped to the side to leave the Realtor Associations and MLS. Once a good number of Brokers leave the NAR, Realtor Associations, and MLS, it would be very difficult for them to exist since there will be no need for them.
It is very sad for organizations that demand us to be ethical and professional but are the very ones who are violating the same standards themselves. It is about time to remove double standards. We need to use our time to assist our clients the best we can instead of battling against the very organizations that are supposed to support and partner with us. While we Brokers are paying them, they are implementing unethical rules and regulations on us with penalties. Even my clients have to step in to express his/her displeasement.
